In Darwin's day, the fossil record started with the abrupt appearance of fossils at the start of what is called the Cambrian. Darwin predicted that fossils would be found older than the 540 million year old Cambrian rocks.  This reddish rock sample from Minnesota is over one billion years old.  The patterns seen in its polished surface fossilized algae.
