Periodical cicada Brood IX to emerge in West Virginia, western Virginia, and northwestern North Carolina in May

Periodical cicadas belonging to Brood IX are set to emerge this year in West Virginia, western Virginia, and northwestern North Carolina. Brood IX last emerged in 2003. The emergence is expected to begin in mid May and last until the end of June.  Three species of 17-year cicadas will be emerging.


Join our Cicada Safari and help map the 2020 emergence. Simply go to your app store and download the Cicada Safari app. Then start searching for cicadas within the emergence region shown on the map. When you find cicadas use the app to photograph the insects and submit it for publication on the 2020 map.
